best

as a piano teacher who washes her hands constantly, i can tell you i've experimented with my fair share of hand creams.
some of them are oily.
some don't last long enough.
some have overwhelming scents.
but i've discovered a favorite, and i'll never go back to anything else again.
it smells divine and leaves my hands feeling soft and silky.
i can usually find it at marshall's, too!

crazy for...

built-ins.
especially those that frame a fireplace

a doorway

or (a) window(s)...
hello, gorgeous!!

someday i'd like to have built-ins, or some sort of window seat surrounded by shelves.
maybe i could work one into our current living room?
now:
sad window, lacks charm
(excuse the mess0 i;m on vacation!!)
future???
i guess it would be more like
free-standing shelves with a bench for reading,
but we do need room for a couch in there...
so says m.

voila!!

i have been desperately wanting to make a gypsy quilt for our guest room but every time i'm at the fabric store, my vision gets clouded by the vast array of patterns and colors overwhelming my senses.  but today i rediscovered an older pottery barn catalogue and inside found just what i've been looking for: a template for just the right patterns. observe.
it's not too loud, but it has a nice variety of patterns and warm, earthy colors that would make our room feel homey and comfortable.  i also think it would work well with any number of different wall colors...
which works well for me because we are planning to re-paint our guest room walls.
***
as a bonus, while i was flipping through the catalogue, i saw this picture:

wouldn't a little cubby like this make a great craft/sewing/art room organizer?
of course, i wouldn't BUY one.
i would make my own...
oh, the things i'll do someday.

last friday one of my mini-dreams came true.
i got to see alison krauss and union station in concert,
courtesy of m's birthday gift to me.
<3
she's been a favorite of mine for years,
and the concert did not disappoint.
the entire performance was positively flawless.
and the chicago theater was amazing.
if i weren't an opera singer, i would definitely be
a bluegrass singer and fiddler extraordinaire.

kitchen on the brain

every time i step into my kitchen i wince a little.  even ignoring the gaping hole in the drywall that has yet to be repaired by m- the space is dingy, impractical, and to say it is outdated would be a gross understatement!
you see, the problem with our kitchen is that is is very oddly shaped.  thinking of the ideal place to place things presents the unfortunate blocking of a doorway or just doesn't work with the window spacing or the fact that there is a chimney obstructing prime cabinet space.
well, the better homes and gardens website presents some lovely photos of possible ways to cleverly use space in a small kitchen- and they offer great ideas for keeping costs down as well...take a look!

putting a decently-sized microwave on a shelf gets it off the counter and opens up space for prepping food.  i love it.

what a clever idea for spices!  i'm sure we can find a rather unusable space somewhere in our kitchen to use for something like this! i'm in love with built-ins.  for spices, books, whatever!

don't you love how the refrigerator is recessed into this kitchen's wall?  m and i have talked about doing this, if we can figure out a way to do so without eliminating too much space from the master bedroom, which is already quite "cozy."

this photo shows the color scheme we've been planning, and bhg.com says the light walls, slate counter tops and white cabinets give a small space an open, airy feeling.  i couldn't agree more!

using shelving such as that shown above may be the only way we can fit needed storage into our kitchen!
don't you just love inspiring ideas?  i myself have a love-hate relationship with them.
because now every time i step into my kitchen i'll have a vision of what it could be!

a bit of sunshine

one of my favorite blogs, a bit of sunshine, has a really fun project that i cannot wait to join!  it's called 10 on 10, and you can read about it here.  until i get a nice camera, my phone one will have to do, but it sounds like so much fun i think i'll try it tomorrow.  why don't you join in the fun as well?

plum-diddly-um

there are so many many pretty things in the world!
lately i've enjoyed looking for all of those pretty things online.
you might know that purple is my favorite color?
plum, to be exact.
if you were at our wedding, you may remember lots of pretty purple.
yes, i love purple.
would you ever paint your walls purple?
these people did, and i think it looks....
you guessed it, pretty.

of course, it's always a nice color to wear as well.
hm... can i think of someplace to wear this vera wang dress?

yahoo!

today we bought the first (two) pieces of furniture for our new home!
they're waiting for us to bring home, and i can't wait!
they have a nice honey hue, but i may recover them along with the couch at some point.
i just love the color scheme the folks over at young house love created for this mood board:
and i think it would look g-r-e-a-t! in our living room.  we have the chocolate colored floors, the straw colored walls, blue green in the kitchen and the bedroom, and i think the yellow/orange would really brighten the room up!

today while we were out at the used furniture store, berry hill home, i saw these cute wood paintings that i thought would be fun in our teal guest room:
that might be a fun project!
for the summer, of course.

W-O-W

the other day i caught just a few moment's of randall wallace's speech at the national prayer breakfast.
he drew me in immediately with his storytelling, and the end of the speech was so moving that i sat in stunned complete silence staring at the radio.

i hope you will take a moment to listen to his speech by clicking below.
you will have to fast forward the video to 36:00.
i swear you won't regret it.

(randall wallace wrote the screenplay to braveheart)

copycat

i loved  hyperbole and a half so much that i decided to experiment with the cartoonish fun.
i made this hyperbolized cartoon version of my family.

i realize this is nothing short of plagiarism,
and this doesn't make me creative or clever,
but it was sure fun.
you'll probably see more sometime.
because life's more fun in cartoons.

Hilarity!!

the dogs are super stressed out because of our impending move.
i relayed this to a co-worker, and she responded by introducing me to a blog i know i will read and read and read and read and read and then read some more.
i haven't laughed SO hard since my sister read entries from her childhood diary.
you must experience it yourself if you have not done so:
it's my new favorite place on the web.
her latest blog reminds me of my two little dogs-
one is the "simple dog," one is the "helper dog."
take a look at this picture and see if you can figure out who is who!
oh well, i love my simple dog. and the smart one, too.

Cold Season Must-Haves!

it's the most wonderful time of the year.  but for a singer like myself it can also be the most dreaded time of the year!  colds can be killer for your voice, and if you use your voice as much as i do, you are always on the look out for ways to prevent losing it.  when i get sick there are a few things i m-u-s-t have handy to keep my voice healthy and to speed up the healing process.  (despite my stellar teaching-generated immune system, i am prone to the occasional illness.)

now, if i would only find my neti pot, i would likely not have gotten sick in the first place!  if you're not familiar with what this is, you'd do well to look into it- it is more helpful in preventing colds and allergic irritation than it is in curing them, but it is a necessity for me all the same (when i can actually find it)
if you use it daily, your sinuses stay healthy and clear of allergens and pathogens.  unfortunately i have not been doing this, so now i have a cold.
that means it's damage control time.
first, i have to have my face steamer.
when you put water in the basin, it generates steam.
breathing in the steam clears out your sinuses and breaks up chest congestion, helping to put an end to coughs and stuffy noses.
mine even has a special attachment just for breathing steam in through the nose.
it's a beautiful thing. it is very soothing and great for your skin, too!

i also keep a plethora of throat drops handy to avoid drying out, which causes more vocal irritation.
my favorites?
the cherry ones are mentholated, and the mixed berry are full of vitamin c; so how can you go wrong?  (they taste yummy, too.)
and speaking of vitamin c, i virtually overdose on emergen-c every time i feel sick or sense an impending cold.  not only does it reboot my immune system, but it gives me the energy that is lost to sickness.  tangerine is tasty in a glass of o.j.
this last little trick is something i just learned yesterday from a woman who had a heavy slavic accent, which gave credibility to her suggestion.  i tried it and found it worthy of making my must-have list.
take a big dab of vick's vaporub and slather it on your feet before bed.
put on two pairs of socks and sleep out the cold!
last night before bed i did just that.  before sleeping i couldn't breathe through my nose, but when i woke this morning my nose was clear and i felt almost completely well!  perhaps this was due to having a good night's sleep.  or perhaps vick's on the feet really is a miracle cure.
so there you have it...
it is my sincere hope that you stay healthy this cold season!  but if you don't, just go out and get yourself a steamer and some vick's and you'll be better again in no time.
